Activities
Herdade dos Mestres is in a privileged geographical location, since it is surrounded by many places and points of interest that can be enjoyed by our guests whether through our activity programmes, or explored at their own leisure. These range from the medieval castles and fortifications, the megalithic route, Alqueva, nautical sports and handicrafts to local gastronomy.
Nature is stunning at the Herdade dos Mestres, with its shale cliffs and the stream meandering across the landscape. There is no end to the experiences offered by Herdade dos Mestres!
Our fields, characterised by their evergreen in winter, blossoming flowers in Spring, golden plains at the onset of Summer which turn ochre to welcome Autumn, are the prime location for walking, cycling and all-terrain trips. If you enjoy direct contact with nature, do not forget to order a tasty picnic lunch, supplied in a basket to be enjoyed beneath the shade of a Holm oak tree or at the side of the stream.
We also offer our guests the opportunity to enjoy nautical sports in Alqueva, to take a guided archaeological tour following the megalithic route, and even walks to observe the fauna and flora or historical points of interest. Observing the sky at the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve is another activity not to be missed.
If you appreciate more tranquil or solitary activities, you may also enjoy the sun and experience nature by reading a book under the shade of a Holm oak tree, drinking a quality wine from the Alentejo region on our verandas, or relaxing and observing the magnificent sunset of the Alentejo.
We can also put you in contact with the local master artisans, to learn more about, or even to actually learn the techniques of their art.
We invite our guests to visit the three castles of Alandroal, Juromenha and Terena, in the county of Alandroal. The Pastel de Nata de Bolota, [custard pastries made from acorn flour]a local speciality, is an absolute must!.
Just a few kilometres away, our guests can also visit the medieval town of Monsaraz, which is protected by its walls, from which a wonderful, typical Alentejano view of Alequeva and the surrounding countryside may be observed, A visit to the Fábrica Alentejana de Lanifícios de Reguengos de Monsaraz [Wool Factory] is also recommended, where the artisans may be seen working on old, semi-manual weaving looms, or to the village of São Pedro do Corval, which has the biggest concentration of potters in the country.
For the lovers of wine tourism, Reguengos de Monsaraz, European Wine City 2015, is definitely worth a visit, where one may stop by at the wine cellars of the region and try the rich gastronomy of the restaurants, with specialities such as migas, gaspacho, sopa de cação, sericaia, bolo de requeijão or bolo de amêndoa and gila.
Herdade dos Mestres offers the most unforgettable experience. We eagerly await your visit!
